roger: i am just responding to what you said about not having a video signal comming in on an older vcr. if a tape deck without tbc will cause distortions in the picture, and that affects the audio in the form of wow, and tbc corrects this, then it does help the audio. you made the statement about this. </font></td></tr></table></td></tr></table></BLOCKQUOTE>
Nah. That's not what I said at all. Read again.

I never said you didn't need a video signal. I said you didn't need a TBC to record in the field accurately. But even on playback, a TBC does NOT affect the audio. If the audio has WOW in it due to a glitch in the tape, you wil still hear the WOW on playback, even if the TBC cleans up the picture. Sorry but that's the reality of it. Again, some decks (old or new) need a video signal and some might not but NONE need a TBC on the input to record constant speed.

I've recorded quite a bit of dialog using a Sony 8mm video walkman, with noTBC, and no video input, and it was rock steady.

i'll just state this for the record and drop the whole debate. my experience is that with older video recorders, without TBC, or black burst or a video signal comming in, the recorder is not stable. i would not recomend using these older machines as sync field recorders.

What debate?

I agree but that's not what got this "debate" started. You said make sure that any deck you use has a TBC, not that you needed a video signal coming into the deck to establish synch pulses on the tape. Your implication was that having the video processed through a TBC would stabilize the sound and it simply will not. And, besides, where does the TBC get its OWN synch reference? From a black burst or composite color video signal! So the TBC is in the same boat as the VCR if it doesn't get a video signal coming into it. Therefore, if you HAVE a video signal anyway, then you don't need the TBC, do you?
As I noted, I do agree that it is best to provide a video signal to your VCR if recording audio or you risk not having any control track pulses to regulate playback speed later on but a TBC is not needed at all and will provide zero increased audio stability on playback.
